Story Introduction

Winter was coming, and Anna needed a new coat. The blue one she had worn for so many years was worn thin and too small for her.

Last winter, Anna's mother said, "When the war is over and we can go shopping again, I'll buy you a beautiful new coat."

But when the war ended, the shops were still empty, there were no coats, no food, and no one had money.

Anna's mother had been thinking about how to get Anna a new coat, and finally, she came up with a solution.

"Anna, I have no money," she said, "but I have Grandfather's gold watch and some fine things which we can perhaps trade for a new coat. First we need some wool. Tomorrow we will visit the owner of the ranch and see if we can get some in return."

The next day, Anna followed her mother to a nearby ranch.

"Anna needs a new coat," Anna's mother told the rancher, "but I have no money. If you give me enough wool to make a coat, I will give you this wonderful gold watch."

The ranch owner said, "That's a good idea! But I have to wait until next spring when I shear the sheep. Then I will have wool to exchange for your gold watch."

Anna has been waiting for the arrival of spring.

Almost every Sunday, she and her mother would visit the sheep. She liked to ask them again and again: "Has your wool grown long?"

The sheep always answered: "Mee-mee-mee"

She also loved to feed them fresh hay and cuddle them. On Christmas Day, Anna brought paper necklaces and apples and sang to the sheep.

Spring is here and the ranchers start shearing the sheep.

"Do they hurt?" Anna asked.

"No, Anna," the ranch owner said, "it's like getting your hair cut."

After shearing enough wool for a coat, the rancher taught Anna how to brush the wool: "It's like you comb out tangles in your hair."

He gave Anna's mother a big bag of wool, and Anna's mother gave him the gold watch.

Anna and her mother took the bag of wool to visit the old woman who had a spinning wheel.

"Anna needs a new coat," Anna's mother told the old woman. "But I have no money. If you spin this wool into yarn, I will give you this beautiful lamp."

The old woman said, "I need a lamp. But I am old, and my fingers are not nimble enough to spin fast enough. You should wait until the cherries are ripe, and then come back to get the wool."

Summer came, and Anna and her mother came again. Anna's mother gave the old woman the lamp, and the old woman gave them wool and a basket of delicious red cherries.

"Anna, what color coat do you like?" asked Anna's mother.

"Red," Anna replied.

"Then we must go get some lingonberries," said Anna's mother. "We can make red dye out of them."

Anna's mother knew that at the end of summer there was a place in the woods where ripe huckleberries could be found.

Anna and her mother boiled water in a large pot and put the lingonberries in it.

After the water turned deep red, Anna's mother soaked white wool in it.

Soon, all the red wool was hanging on the clothesline.

After drying, Anna and her mother rolled the wool into balls.

They took the balls of yarn to the weaver aunt.

"Anna needs a new coat," Anna's mother said. "But I have no money. If you will weave this wool into cloth, I will give you this jewel necklace."

The weaver said, "What a beautiful necklace! I'd love to knit the yarn. Come back in two weeks and pick it up!"

When Anna and her mother came again, the weaver gave them a piece of beautiful red cloth, and Anna's mother gave the weaver the sparkling jewel necklace.

The next day, Anna and her mother went to see the tailor.

"Winter is coming, and Anna needs a new coat," Anna's mother told the tailor, "but I have no money. If you make a coat out of this cloth, I'll give you this porcelain teapot."

"That's a really nice teapot," the tailor said. "I'd be happy to make you a new coat, Anna, but first I need to take your measurements."

He measured her shoulders, he measured her arms, he measured her back from neck to knees, and then he said, "Come back next week and I'll give you a new coat."

The tailor first made the pattern, then cut the fabric, sewed it, and hemmed it, working his needle and sewing for a whole week. When he was done, he found six lovely buttons from his button box and sewed them on the coat to match them perfectly.

He proudly hung his coat in the window for everyone to see.

When Anna and her mother returned to the tailor's shop, she tried on her new coat and kept spinning in front of the mirror. The coat looked so beautiful.
